Review: Jack in the Box - Outlaw Burger

What's typically called a "Western" or "BBQ Bacon" burger at other chains is named the Outlaw Burger at Jack in the Box.

The Outlaw Burger features a jumbo hamburger patty, lettuce, tomato, hickory-smoked bacon, American cheese, onion rings, and a bourbon barbecue sauce on a sesame seed bun for $3.49.

I was pleasantly surprised by the heft and size of the Outlaw Burger. It came packaged in a box instead of wrapping paper which allowed the burger to keep its shape without being squished together.
Whereas some other "western" burgers are a bit too heavy handed with the barbecue sauce, Jack's was a bit more moderate with their sauce application for which I was thankful. The sauce itself is the same as found in Jack in the Box's Bourbon BBQ Steak Grilled Sandwich and is tangier but not a tomato-y as the standard stuff.

The bacon was crisp and thin but lent a good smoky flavor. The veggies were fresh and crisp and the beef patty was just the right size to balance the other ingredients. The onion rings were actually crisp instead of soggy separated as they were from the barbecue sauce (ingenious!). Most chains smother the onion rings in sauce.
I have to say Jack in the Box's Outlaw Burger is pretty damn good; a fast food exemplar of balancing burger ingredients to make for a great "western" burger. It's too bad it's only here for a limited-time...

  1. Nice review, this looks good. I've always thought JITB burgers were a bit underrated, I think they usually are decent for the price.
