Review: Biscoff Crunchy Spread

Biscoff Crunchy Spread is something that I had never heard of until my cousin mentioned it to me. It's a spread with a peanut-butter-like consistency that is made of finely ground Biscoff cookies (the spread is 65% cookie) with crumbled cookies bits of Biscoff mixed it to provide some crunch; a smooth version is also available but the crunchy version is new.

I got my jar to try for free courtesy of Biscoff but I'm told that it goes for about $5 for a 13.4-ounce jar at Fresh & Easy and is also available online from the company directly as well as Amazon. I've never personally seen it in stores before though.

When I was asked if I would like to try Biscoff Spread, I jumped at the chance because it's cookies that's a spread(!). Right?! It's an interesting idea and I figured it would be really good or really weird.

Opening the jar, it looked a little bit like lumpy natural mixed peanut butter (because it you don't mix the natural kind, it separates into peanuts and oil) but darker which gave it more than a passing resemblance to poo. Fortunately, it did not smell like poo; it smells like Biscoff really which is a sweet cinnamon scent that's quite pleasing (I like to open the jar sometimes and just sniff it).

The label on the jar says to use it as a substitute for peanut butter on stuff like toast and apples so I spread it on some bread.

It feels like peanut butter but with a slightly thinner consistency and small bits of cookies (and a cookie crunch not a peanut crunch). But the question is: "How's it taste?" I think the best way to describe it is that it tastes like Biscoff cookies but feels like peanut butter. It really does taste like a Biscoff cookie which is like a light gingerbread cookie but without the ginger. It's really good and compares similarly to peanut butter calorie- and fat-wise but obviously isn't going to give you much in the nutrients department (it is basically cookies after all).

My cousin, upon sampling the spread, opined that she'd rather just eat the cookie. Which is fine, but I think overlooks the utility of the spread which allows you to pair the Biscoff flavor with other foods. It goes really well with plain white bread. I still haven't tried it with apples or carrots but I'm looking forward to tasting it to see if it meshed.

Biscoff spread is really tasty and interesting. It's one of those rare things that you should just try, if not for the taste, than just for the novelty. I mean, it's a cookie spread! It's kinda like if you told me about Nutella before I ever heard about it.

For those with special dietary requirements, the spread is vegan.
