Review: Wendy's - Baked Sweet Potato

Wendy's Baked Sweet Potato is a new, limited time Signature Side on the menu and is simply a baked sweet potato served with an all-natural buttery cinnamon spread.

I got mine's for free courtesy of Wendy's but these normally sell for $2.49.

You'll notice in the picture that mine's was missing the cinnamon spread so I can't really speak as to that. I will say that from the promo pictures it looks like a bit like more liquidy smooth peanut butter.

Do not worry though, I did not let the forgetfulness of my local Wendy's mar my sweet potato experience and simply topped my potato with a light sprinkle of brown sugar and a small pat of butter.

The baked potato is a unique feature of Wendy's in the fast food world; they actually wrap a potato (or sweet potato in this case) and toss them in the oven for about an hour. Size-wise, Wendy's potatoes (sweet or otherwise) are really more of an entree than a side.

While I'm fine with eating a regular potato's skin, the sweet potato's skin is a bit dry and papery. Not so easy to chew or eat. While it's technically edible, I think it's more of an acquired taste... acquired by very few...

The sweet potato's meat is a bit more fibrous than a regular russet potato with a light sweetness in this case (I've eaten other sweet potatoes with a more pronounced sweetness). The addition of brown sugar is a welcome touch that I actually picked up down south while visiting Krispy Kreme; it accentuates the potatoes natural sweetness. And the butter? We all know butter makes everything better!

Overall, Wendy's Sweet Potato is a pretty nice and tasty option (especially sprinkled with a little brown sugar) although it really comes down to whether you like sweet potatoes or not. As a bonus, it's rich in nutrients (it has a buttload of Vitamin A) and more convenient than waiting an hour to cook one at home. I'd get the cinnamon butter spread on the side (not that I know how it tastes...) and see if you like it better with or without.

  3. Use butter not the brownsugar butter they whip up.  And of all things, I was served a yam instead of a sweet potato.

  5. Wow, Don, so you were served a footlong woody tuber from Africa? If not then it was a sweet potato. American "yams" ARE sweet potatoes.
