Review: Wendy's - Chili Cheese Fries

Wendy's Chili Cheese Fries is a new "Signature Side" that was recently added to the Wendy's menu. It features Wendy's Natural-Cut Fries topped with their trademark chili, cheddar cheese sauce, and a sprinkle of shredded cheddar.

It sells for $2.49 but I got this one for free courtesy of Wendy's.

One of the requisites of a good rendition of chili cheese fries is the crispness of the fries and how well they stand up to the chili and cheese. Unfortunately, the fries I received from my local Wendy's were on the soft side and didn't have that crisp, freshly fried layer to battle the heat of the chili and cheese.

The cheese sauce was a decent but a bit too mild for my liking. I wanted something more like processed nacho cheese or at the other end of the spectrum just some plain shredded cheddar.

Wendy's Chili sets their chili cheese apart from other chili cheese fries I've tried; it's a bit more tomato-y and a bit more varied with beans and bits of diced onions. Usually, when I get chili cheese fries, it looks something like this. I like the thicker and meatier stuff but Wendy's Chili still works.

Overall, Wendy's Chili Cheese Fries were just okay for me. I would have liked it better if my fries were crisp and just covered with shredded cheddar before being smothered in chili.

  1. Does Wendy's offer little packets of red pepper or whatever to allow the one scarfing the chili cheese fries (or any edible sold by Wendy's) to add to the "hotness"?

If not.... then Wendy's needs better upper-level corporate management.

At the least, send an employee over to Taco Bell and grab a pile of pepper packets and place said packets where patrons can partake of peppery pleasure.

  2. Wendy's does have little gold packets of sauce to spice up the chili.  I don't get it very often but it is a clear liquid from what I recall.

  3. Exactly why? Just curious... the cheese in the first pic does look a little gross to me, but I think chili cheese fries are generally underrated and not offered enough in the fast food world. I was hoping this would be decent as a side.
