Review: Burger King - Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich

Burger King's Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich features tender pulled pork mixed with BK's Memphis BBQ Sauce (Sweet Baby Ray’s Sweet ‘n Spicy BBQ sauce), topped simply with sliced onions and something they're calling a Sweet Southern dressing. It's served on the same artisan bun they used for the BK Chef's Choice Burger.

I picked one up at my local Burger King for $3.49.

If the Bacon Sundae looked a lot like the promo photo, the Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich sits at the other end of the spectrum. The colors a bit off and the pork is quite compacted.

I've never been to Memphis so I can't comment on how close Burger King's version comes to the real thing (I imagine not very), but when I think of pulled pork, I think of smoked fork-tender pork. Burger King's version, unsurprisingly, is more like braised pork and lacks that dry smokiness. I got a good amount though.

The pork here had been cooked too long and overstepped the line between tender and mushy. Some parts had an almost paste-like consistency, while others still had that shredded pulled pork feel. Flavor-wise, it wasn't bad; a decent pork flavor, not too salty.

I tend to like Sweet Baby Ray's and this occasion was no exception. The sauce was judiciously applied and the taste wasn't overbearing and maintained a notable sweet smokiness though I wouldn't say it was spicy at all. The "Sweet Southern" dressing isn't the norm for Memphis pulled pork as far as I know. It lends a bit of slightly slight creaminess to the sandwich and cuts against the barbecue sauce.

The soft, squishy bun cradled the pork perfectly and held up admirably against the pulled pork where a lesser bun would have turned soggy. I wished the onions were just a tad more crispy, but they were still good and a nice complement to the pork and barbecue sauce.

In taste, Burger King's Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich is fairly good, but I really don't like the texture of the pork. As long as you don't mind the texture, you might find yourself with a reasonably enjoyable sandwich.

  1. The pulled pork sandwich was REALLY good.  I love BBQ and the sauce, and this was excellent for $3.49.  I am saddened by the carbs in it though, but what did I expect?  Yummy.

  2. The "sweet southern dressing" you mentioned is actually a coleslaw sauce.

  4. Just tried this pulled pork sandwich. Absolutely love it! I think it is comparable to BBQ pulled pork at many of the sit- down barbecue rests. That I have been to. Burger King has gotten pretty impressive.

  5. This was GROSS. a hot mess! As the reviewer said, the pork is like paste...and there was so much sauce or both kinds it oozed from every bite. Leave it to Burger King to have coleslaw SAUCE and not coleslaw. There could have been just sauce on the bun and it would have been just as good.
