Review: Klondike - Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwiches

Klondike's new Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwiches feature chocolate light ice cream sandwiched between two square chocolate wafers.

A box of six sandwiches retails at my local Ralph's supermarket for $4.99 ($2.99 on sale), but I got this box for free courtesy of Unilever/Klondike.

I've loved ice cream sandwiches since I was in elementary school and they used to sell them at lunch time for 25 cents. Klondike's version deviates from the more typical rectangular shape in lieu of Klondike's more distinctive square.

The chocolate wafers strike a perfect balance between being too soft (and sticking to your fingers) and being two hard (and pushing out the ice cream when you bite into it). They're of a decent thickness and exhibit an enjoyable chocolaty flavor.

The ice cream, on the other hand, is fairly light on the chocolate flavor. It's more like a chocolate milk flavor than a rich and creamy milk chocolate candy bar. Perhaps the concern was that a stronger flavor would be too similar to the sandwich wafers. The ice cream has a nice texture, but isn't particularly creamy.

The end result is the combination of great chocolate wafers with an "okay" chocolate ice cream filling. Klondike's Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwiches are fairly middling; it doesn't quite go for that rich chocolate flavors to appease chocolate lovers, but it's still chocolate.

For me, I prefer the contrasting, but complementary, pairing of chocolate wafers and vanilla over the repeating flavor of chocolate on chocolate.
