Frozen Friday: Healthy Choice - Beef and Broccoli

Healthy Choice's Beef and Broccoli is billed as "a fresh take on an old favorite" and features chunks of beef with diced onions and red peppers over whole grain brown rice with a teriyaki sauce and broccoli on the side.

These normally sell for $3.99 at my local supermarket ($2.50 or so on sale).

Beef and Broccoli is probably best known as a Panda Express staple and if that is what you are looking for, you'll be sorely disappointed here. The beef and broccoli aren't even cooked together; the broccoli is simply steamed and comes in a separate side compartment.

The beef here isn't tender at all. It was kinda tough and flavorless, and was the weakest part of the meal. The sauce is a light, slightly tangy soy sauce base tinged with sweetness and hints of pepper. It's quite pleasant and not too salty. The box describes it was "sweet & spicy," but my tongue didn't detect any heat whatsoever.

The broccoli came in a good amount and was curiously mostly stems. I'm not saying that every box is mostly broccoli stems or anything. Just noting that my box happened to be, curiously, mostly stems. They were just slightly overcooked and seemed unseasoned. You can dip them in the teriyaki sauce for a bit of flavor.

The rice turned out pretty well. It was moist and tender. I will say that the rice was the whitest brown rice I have ever seen, and just very lightly brown. It exhibited that telltale brown rice nuttiness though. I liked it.

Bottomline: Healthy Choice's Beef and Broccoli was a nice blend of light flavors, but the beef was way too tough. It's not similar at all to any beef and broccoli you'd order at a restaurant, but I think that's the point.
