Review: Fresh & Easy - Smashing Pumpkin Pie

Fresh & Easy's Smashing Pumpkin Pie is described on the box as "A creamy pumpkin filling, loaded with cinnamon and spices, then surrounded by our signature flakey, buttery crust."

It was only $2.99 for a 19-ounce pie, so I snagged one before Thanksgiving.

Fresh & Easy has been fairly hit or miss for me in the baked goods department. The Smashing Pumpkin Pie, unfortunately, falls flat into the "miss" side of the equation.

I'll start with the crust. It was about as nondescript a crust as I had ever eaten. It functioned to keep my hands clean of the pumpkin filling, but left me blank in the taste and texture department. It was also possibly undercooked on the bottom and certainly not "flakey." I didn't catch a note of buttery flavor until the very edge of the end crust.

On one hand, the pie filling delivered on the more subtle, and creamy flavor of pumpkin.

On the other hand, the reason I could taste the full flavor of pumpkin was because the spice and brown sugar took a seat at the very back of a long bus with pumpkin at the wheel. It was interesting, but not exactly what I am looking for in a Thanksgiving Day pumpkin pie. "Loaded with cinnamon and spices" it was not.

All in all, I was pretty disappointed with Fresh & Easy's lackluster Smashing Pumpkin Pie. At least, it was cheap. Then again, for the money, I could have gotten my beloved Pumpkin Pie Cookies instead (but, unfortunately, they were out).

  1. This was literally THE WORST pumpkin pie I have ever had the misfortune of tasting. The crust is literally tasteless; it's like eating... smushy nothingness. I tried to taste something and there was just nothing. And there's barely any taste to the filling as well, unless you count the bitter taste of disappointment. :/
