Review: El Pollo Loco - Chocolate Nachos

El Pollo Loco's new Chocolate Nachos features fried chocolate flour tortilla chips topped with a chocolate fudge sauce, marshmallow creme, and a dusting of powdered sugar.

A roughly half-pound, family-sized plate comes in at $3.99.

I liked the chocolate tortilla chips. They were similar in taste and texture to the ones found on Taco Bell's Mexican Pizza, but with a light chocolaty flavor to them. They were crunchy, just slightly oily, and didn't turn soggy despite the various sauces.

The chocolate sauce is similar to what you'd find on an ice cream sundae, but where the ice cream sundae is tempered with cream, here the chocolate sauce is left to run amok in its sweetness and heightened further by the overwhelming marshmallow sauce. The result is an altogether sugary mess. The powdered sugar is completely unnecessary here.

Basically when it came down to it, the chips were good (great even), but between all the various forms of sugar on top, it was hard to enjoy unless I scraped much of the sauce off or found a bare chip in the pile. A much better way to have these would be to ask for the marshmallow creme and fudge sauce on the side where you can control the sweetness by dipping as much (or as little as you want).
