Frozen Friday: Trader Joe's - Aloo Chaat Kati Pouches

Trader Joe's Aloo Chaat Kati Pouches are a savory crispy pastry filled with potatoes, chick peas, chaat masala, and tamarind chutney.

An 8-ounce box of two pouches were $2.29.

The immediate thought when looking at one of these is that it resembles a Hot Pocket. There's a rolled pre-baked dough around a hot filling and you microwave it in a crisping sleeve. I guess you could easily describe it as like a vegetarian Indian Hot Pocket. It's a bit flatter than your typical Hot Pocket.

Opening the microwave, a nice aroma wafted it out to greet me: the smell of masala (spices).

The crust doesn't quite get crispy and was soft with a nice chew and just a little bit of flakiness. A Hot Pocket is usually more bread-like with more air pockets. There was an odd area of crispiness, but mostly it was soft. There's a tinge of greasy flavor to the crust.

Inside, the filling is an enjoyable mix of mostly soft potatoes, chick peas (garbanzo beans), and onions with a slight tang from tamarind and mango. There's also a low burn from the spices and a subtle amount of flavor.

Overall, I liked these a fair bit. There's a nice bit of flavor here. It's vegetarian, but I don't find myself wishing there was some sort of meat in it.

  1. Breading and potatoes is too much starch.

  2. More fat and salt than I thought there would be, too.

    I wonder why?
