Review: Burger King - Bacon Gouda Breakfast Sandwich

Burger King's new, limited-time Bacon Gouda Breakfast Sandwich is a slight variation on the bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich that adds Gouda cheese and an herb sauce into the combination. It's available on a croissant, English muffin, or biscuit. I went with the muffin.

My local Burger King prices these at $2.99 per sandwich (in fact, all their breakfast sandwiches, except for the value ones, are $2.99).

Upon inspection, the Bacon Gouda is very much an egg sandwich; the amount of egg dwarfs everything else in the sandwich save for the English muffin.

The muffin is fairly standard for fast food, which was to say by the time I got it out of its wrapper, it was soft all around. If you have access to a toaster oven, a quick toast does a world of good for the muffin.

Fortunately, Burger King's egg is pretty good and comes in a fluffy, folded plain omelet.

The bacon was lightly crispy and came two half-strips to the sandwich. The flavor was decently smoky and came through in most of my bites.

Cheese melted very well (to the point where it was almost a sauce) but lacked a strong flavor. It's mellow and creamy. With the light flavor, I could have used a thicker slice.

The herb spread is mostly oily with a mild green onion (the ingredients include shallots) and parsley flavor.

Overall, Burger King's Bacon Gouda Muffin was pretty good and fairly well executed, but didn't quite deliver on the more distinctive flavor of Gouda cheese. Mild cheese are pretty much par for the course in fast food land though.

  1. I don't appreciate the BK fake eggs.

  2. The "herb spread" is butter flavored oil with bits of parsley and i think chives in it. This sandwich is proving pretty popular, at least at my restaurant.

  3. Yeah, I think it varies from location to location. Mine had a reasonable amount of the spread.
