Local Review: Al's French Frys - Cheeseburger and Fries

Al's French Frys in Burlington, VT has been around since the late 1940s and sports the decor of a classic diner, while slinging good old burgers and fries.

I went for an order of fries ("frys") and a cheeseburger with mustard, relish, and onions (bacon, lettuce, tomato, and chili are extra). The cheeseburger was $1.75 and a cup of fries was $1.60, which is pretty nice.

They grill the burger patties here to a real nice looking crust. I saw the guy working the grill plop down a thin round bacon slice and immediately regretted not going with bacon.

The burgers are about the size of a McDonald's burger. The bun was a little on the dry side possibly due to being kept warm on the grill. Interestingly, the insides aren't toasted (at least not noticeably so).

While the patty looked good, I couldn't really taste it over the relish. I took a bite and wished I had gone for the double hamburger. The cheese was melted thoroughly but very light and the diced onions were fresh and crunchy.

Still, there's a reason the joint is called "Al's French Frys" rather than "Al's Burgers."

The French fries were fresh and double fried to a crunchy skin while remaining delectably moist and chock full of potato flavor within. I especially liked that they were only lightly salted, which made them great with ketchup or on their own. There was also an option for cheese and gravy for dipping.

In sum, if you ever find yourself at Al's French Frys in Burlington, definitely go for the fries and if you get a burger, be sure to make it a double!
