Review: Arby's - King's Hawaiian Roast Beef and Swiss Sandwich

Arby's new, limited-time King's Hawaiian Roast Beef & Swiss sandwich features an extra 1/3 portion of thin-sliced roast beef, Swiss cheese, pickles, and a creamy Dijon sauce on a King's Hawaiian hamburger bun.

My local Arby's has them on the menu for $4.49 each.

King's Hawaiian bread is known for it's dense and squishy soft texture and just the right touch of sweetness. I've eaten a lot of sweet breads/dinner rolls and King's has always been my favorite. It tastes great buttered and grilled on a Spam and egg sandwich, but I wasn't sure how it would go with Arby's signature roast beef...

It turns out it goes quite well. The extra portion of beef supplies an ideal amount of savory beef flavor and a delicate tender texture that fits well with the bread's slight sweetness. It's just the right amount of meat to balance out against the pickles and dijon sauce.

The Dijon mustard is light with visible mustard seeds to provide just a bit of that horseradish kick.

The pickles are deli-style pickles with a good crunch and a bit of a sour bite that's interesting without ever being overpowering.

The weakest part of the sandwich is the Swiss cheese, which melts okay, but provides only a vague sense of creaminess rather than any distinct notes of flavor.

Overall, I found Arby's King's Hawaiian Roast Beef & Swiss to be a well-thought-out collaboration as well as a well-balanced and beefy sandwich.

  1. Any noticeable differences between this bun and the King's Hawaiaan buns you can pick up from the grocery store? Is the sweetness identical?

  2. I didn't do a side-by-side comparison, but it feels and tastes the same to me.

  3. Why would they use a white guy speaking Hawaiian instead of a real Hawaiian in their commercial?

  5. I abhor pickles and NOTHING on any literature Arby’s prints promoting this sandwich mentions that they ruin it with pickles. I also gag on mustard, just the smell of mustard makes me want to throw up. No where did it mention that there was mustard in this sauce. Without question, this is the worst sandwich I have ever eaten. If I hadn’t gotten it to go, I would have demanded my money back.

  6. Try the one without the junk. And I agree pickles and mustard on roast beef and sweet bread has to be yuck. The plain one though with the Arby's sauce was yummy.

  9. Mustard is just one of those sauces that goes with beef. The flavors suit each other very well, but if you don't like mustard then just get the regular king Hawaiian as opposed to the Swiss. The regular is beef and bun and that's it allowing you to customize the sandwich to your liking. The king Hawaiian Swiss is the one with all the extras. Also if you order at arbys you can always request the sauce on the side as opposed to on the sandwich.
