Review: Nabisco - Mallomars

Nabisco's Mallomars are round graham crackers topped with a marshmallow and covered in dark chocolate. They've been around since 1913 and are not distributed by Nabisco during the summer months (that doesn't mean you can't find them; it just means they don't ship them out).

I usually don't see them on sale and they tend to cost about $5 for an 8-ounce box, but I found this particular box at Big Lots for $2.50 (score!).

I've never actually had a Mallomar before. According to the little blurb on the box, "more than 70% of all Mallomars sales" are sold in the New York City area.

The reason they're not shipped during the summer months is supposedly because the chocolate will melt, but I don't buy that. There's plenty of chocolate sold in the summer months. Some devoted fans have been known to stock up during the winter months in preparation for the summer though.

What's sets these apart from other cookies with a "chocolaty" or "fudge" coating is that they're actually covered in chocolate, whereas "chocolaty" and "fudge" are buzzwords for "made with cocoa but not actual chocolate." It also explains the price as chocolate tends to cost more.

I'm not a huge fan of marshmallows, but these are really good! Being mostly marshmallow, each Mallomar is pretty light, but biting into it yields a rich dark chocolate flavor complemented by airy marshmallow and slightly crispy graham cracker. It's a little bit like eating a s'more but with a deeper chocolate flavor. The graham cracker is softer than is typical and is pretty crumbly.

Because of the chocolate, it feels a little like eating a cookie and a candy in one. There's enough of each ingredient that I can't quite decide whether it's one or the other.

In short, Mallomars are super good! Unless you hate marshmallows or dark chocolate, I recommend giving them a try.

  1. Native NYer here. Mallomars are made with a very pure dark chocolate and it melts at a much lower rate than other chocolate you might find.

  2. I can see that. What really surprises me is that they don't sell as well outside of NY.
