Review: Lay's - Cheesy Garlic Bread Potato Chips

Lay's Cheesy Garlic Bread-flavored potato chips was the winner of the "Do Us a Flavor" contest and is being sold for a limited time.

I picked up a 9.5-ounce bag on sale for $2.50.

There was fairly pungent cheesy smell when I opened up the bag. I can't say it's the most appetizing of smells emanating from a bag of chips and had me a little bit leery of trying them. But as they say, "Down the hatch..."

The chips tasted eerily and surprisingly like cheesy garlic bread paired with deep-fried potato (of course). There's a cheesy top note and a garlicky aftertaste that's pretty interesting. The only thing missing is the warmth of toasted/baked bread and the gooey texture of melted cheese.

That being said, I probably wouldn't get it again. While I like cheesy garlic bread, I prefer the actual dish over a potato chip flavored like it. The tactile cues are one of my favorite things about garlic bread and the crunch of a chip doesn't quite make up for it.

Overall, while it's not bad and delivers on the promise of cheesy garlic bread, Lay's Cheesy Garlic Bread-flavored potato chips is the answer to a question I never asked. It amuses the taste buds but it's not for me.

  1. Wasn't for me either. I'd choose the plain ol' boring Lays over these.

  2. I felt they had a really bad after taste. Smell was kinda good from what I remember but that was about it.

I would never buy these again.

  3. I like them.. if I had to choose between plain Lays or these, I'd probably stick with the plain chips too, but I wouldn't turn a handful of these once in a while. The flavor is a little strong for eating a whole bag in one sitting though.

  5. For me, the garlic flavor was too strong, and I agree on the bad aftertaste.

Out of curiosity, I bought a bag last week during a road trip. As soon as I opened the bag, my sister said, "What's that smell?!"

Tasted better than it smelled, though, but I think they'll need to tweak that odor.
