Review: Drake's - Devil Dogs

Drake's Devil Dogs are basically two flat pieces of devil's food cake sandwiching a layer of creme. They're similar to Little Debbie's Devil Cremes.

They don't actually sell them on the West Coast, but the company was kind enough to send me a box to try. The suggested retail price is $2.99 for a 13.24-ounce box of 8 cakes. If you can't find a local supply however, they're available on Amazon for a much higher $6.73 plus shipping.

Drake's was most recently owned by Hostess but was sold off to McKee Foods (owner of Little Debbie's) as part of bankruptcy proceedings.

If you (like me) don't live on (or aren't from) the East Coast, you maybe have caught these in Disney's Wreck It Ralph where they played the part of guard dogs in the world of Sugar Rush.

The cake itself was dense and spongy. It felt a little powdery but melts in your mouth. Compared to a Hostess Zinger, it's denser and not as sticky.

The flavor wasn't so much the rich chocolate of devil's food cake so much as a strong cocoa flavor that is just lightly sweet.

The creme was my favorite part and provides most of the sweetness of the cake. It had a pretty good consistency; fairly thick and not too thin. Also, it didn't have that oily mouthfeel that some cremes have.

Overall, Drake's Devil Dogs are nice enough, but I was looking for a richer chocolate flavor rather than cocoa. Still, if you grew up eating these, there's always a touch of nostalgia in eating them.
