Frozen Friday: DiGiorno Meatball Marinara Pizza

DiGiorno's Meatball Marinara Pizza is topped with Italian-style meatballs, mozzarella cheese, and marinara sauce. It's part of their Italian-Style Favorites line, which come on a rising crust pizza with a "touch" of olive oil and herbs.

A 27.9-ounce pizza was $5.00 on sale.

The meatball were a good size and were moist with a nice bit of herby flavor. The rest of the pizza was lackluster though.

The cheese added gooey stretch but very little in the way of flavor. Maybe some parmesan would have helped.

The marinara sauce wasn't exactly zesty and I think I would have preferred a run-of-the-mill spaghetti sauce or generic pizza sauce.

The crust developed a nice crunch that was almost like a crusty baguette. Unfortunately, it was like a day old crusty baguette and lacked that soft freshness. It's also fairly thick (their pizza tends to be thick in general) and overwhelmed the other ingredients. I could taste a bit of the olive oil though.

Overall, DiGiorno's Meatball Marinara Pizza was a miss for me; I've had better success with their single-serve microwave pizzas. I liked the meatballs but that's about it. It felt like I was eating bread rather than pizza. I guess it could have made for a decent meatball sub-thing if they tripled up on the sauce and cheese and folded it over.

At the $5 price point, it's basically competing against Little Caesars and I'd rather get a Hot-N-Ready over this.
