Review: Trader Joe's - Speculoos Cookie & Cocoa Swirl Spread

Trader Joe's Speculoos Cookie & Cocoa Swirl Spread is new this year and similar to those peanut butter and jelly swirl spreads but with cookies and cocoa.

A 14.1-ounce was $3.99.

Speculoos are a type of shortbread cookie with a spiced caramelized flavor. They're like a lighter version of gingerbread cookies. Somewhere along the line, someone had the idea to make them into a spread by mixing the cookies (crushed into powder) with vegetable oils and here we are.

The consistency of the spread ranges from crunchy to smooth and creamy and they went with the latter here. It looks and feels similar to peanut butter but tastes like cookies.

The cocoa swirl is similar to Nutella but with just a hint of hazelnut leaving mostly chocolaty notes.

When the two are spread on toast or what not, it's the cocoa that makes the biggest impression. The overall effect is a chocolaty spread with a bit of carmelized cookie flavor and just a touch of hazelnut.

Overall, Trader Joe's Speculoos Cookie & Cocoa Swirl Spread makes for a pretty nice chocolaty spread to eat on bread, cookies, and the like (or fruit if you're looking for something healthier). I'd prefer more cookie and hazelnut flavors though since that's what I enjoy about its respective components. Still, some people want a tasty chocolaty spread with less of the other stuff.
