Review: Hostess - Banana Twinkies

Hostess Banana Twinkies feature the classic golden sponge snack cake with a banana-flavored creme filling. According to the box, it's an "artificially flavored banana creamy filling." They're a limited-time Walmart-exclusive.

A 13.58-ounce box of 10 cakes was $3.99.

While it may be artificially flavored, the banana creme did a pretty dead-on impression of a banana and was tasty to boot. Interestingly, when they first came out, Twinkies were filled with banana cream but a shortage during WWII forced the company to switch to vanilla cream, so you can think of these as retro Twinkies.

Beyond the tasty banana creme, the sponge cake remains the same: a spongy, slightly sticky yellow cake.

Overall, Hostess Banana Twinkies were pretty good. I enjoyed the banana flavor and it fits well with the yellow cake (in appearance as well as taste).

And, if you're wondering "why bananas?" It's part of a promotional cross-over with the Despicable Me 2 movie. The minions in the movies love bananas (see this song) and bear a remarkable resemblance to Twinkies.
