News: General Mills Brings Own Version of Doritos Locos Tacos Home

General Mills' Old El Paso brand offers new Nacho Cheese Taco Shells, an imitation of Taco Bell's Doritos Locos Nacho taco shell, in a taco dinner kit to make at home.

The shells have a flat bottom so you can stand them up while you fill them and feature nacho cheese flavoring inside and out.

The 9-oz dinner kit includes 10 nacho cheese-flavored taco shells, taco sauce, and seasoning mix and will be available in August.

According to Businessweek, General Mills had offered flavored taco shells before way back in 2006, before anyone had ever heard of a Doritos Locos Taco, in both nacho and salsa flavors. The flavor was baked into the shell, but this time around, they're going with the over-the-top powdered stuff typical of a Doritos chip (and the Doritos Locos Taco shell).

You have to wonder if the Taco Bell at-home brand licensed to Kraft will soon follow suit as a Johnny-come-lately to their own game. Maybe with Cool Ranch DLTs?

General Mills is also venturing into frozen Burrito Bowls with the Old El Paso brand. The available flavors are Honey Chipotle Chicken and Carne Asada Steak featuring typical ingredients like seasoned rice, black beans, and roasted vegetables. They're available starting this summer in the frozen food aisle.
