Review: Sonic - Sonic's Garlic Parmesan Cheesy Bread Dog

Sonic's Garlic Parmesan Cheesy Bread Dog features a hot dog bun with shredded cheddar baked onto it, filled with a beef hot dog, garlic parmesan sauce, and grilled onions.

It's normally $2.89 for the hot dog, but this one was provided courtesy of Sonic.

They also have a Cheese & Bacon version, but I tried that combo with a pretzel bun and found it lackluster (and very salty).

The cheesy bread bun works out to be more a gimmick than anything. I couldn't pick out the cheese's flavor at all, even when eating just the bun. The cheesy rolls for 50 cents at my local chain supermarket offer a lot more flavor. Beyond that the bun itself isn't your standard hot dog bun but instead is a soft, dense roll that gives you the same texture as a pretzel bun without the signature taste.

The hot dog was juicy and tasty. The garlic parmesan mostly provided a creamy parmesan platform with just a touch of garlic. It's balanced out by the grilled onions, which were cooked perfectly with a sweet delicious pop when I bit into them.

Overall, Sonic's Garlic Parmesan Cheesy Bread Dog was pretty enjoyable, but the bun is a fairly poor rendition of cheesy bread.

I also tried the garlic parmesan and onion combination on a pretzel bun on a previous visit to try the Garlic Parmesan Cheesy Bread Dog because I ordered it and they didn't bother to tell me that they were out of cheesy bread buns and instead just substituted a pretzel bun. The pretzel doesn't quite work as well with the garlic parmesan sauce (but it might also be because they barely gave me any onions on that one).
