Review: Del Taco - Cheesy Potato Poppers

A pouch of Del Taco Cheesy Potato Poppers.

Del Taco's Cheesy Potato Poppers feature diced potatoes mixed with cheddar cheese and diced jalapenos, shaped into short ovoid poppers, and then breaded and deep-fried.

I bought an order of 4 poppers for $1.99.

These are basically cheesy tots with jalapenos. The breading was crisp and the cheese was nicely melted.

The cheese had a mostly American processed cheese flavor with maybe a mild hint of cheddar. There's more potato than cheese so that it doesn't quite ooze like a typical jalapeno popper.

Cross-section of a Del Taco Cheesy Potato Popper.

The potato portion was moist and tender like you'd get in a decent tater tot.

Though I could see the little pieces of jalapeno, these didn't have much heat to them.

Overall, Del Taco's Cheesy Potato Poppers are nice enough, but feature a too familiar cast of flavors in a just slightly different form. I'd rather have tater tots with a jalapeno nacho cheese dip or a cheddar-stuffed jalapeno popper instead though.
