Review: Carl's Jr. / Hardee's Grilled Cheese Breakfast Sandwich

Carl's Jr. / Hardee’s Grilled Cheese Breakfast Sandwich features two slices of American and one slice of Swiss cheese, folded egg, and either sausage, bacon, or ham on grilled sourdough bread.

I purchased one for $3.29.

Hardee’s has already experimented with sourdough breakfast sandwiches that come with ham, so I went with sausage on my grilled cheese. It is in all the promotional materials, after all. The sausage was not as salty or greasy as I am used to getting on a breakfast sandwich. The sausage patty was of pretty substantial thickness, but wasn't quite wide enough to cover all of the bread.

The sourdough bun was unfortunately only lightly toasted, which seems to be a regular occurrence at Hardee’s for me lately. That said, it was buttery and it held up well.

Of course, the main draw to this sandwich is the cheese. The extra slice of American , as well as the addition of Swiss really stand out. The cheese was plenty gooey and did the job of evoking the sensation of eating a grilled cheese. However, I’m not sure that much cheese is a great idea for breakfast. The egg was thin and barely noticeable under all of it.

Overall the Hardee's Grilled Cheese Breakfast Sandwich is just a slight variation of your average breakfast sandwich. The cheese is significant to the dish, but I wouldn't go for this one unless I was looking for something extra cheesy.
