Review: Jack in the Box - Bacon & Swiss Buttery Jack

Jack in the Box's Bacon & Swiss Buttery Jack features a seasoned quarter-pound beef patty topped with melted herb butter, hickory-smoked bacon, a slice of Swiss cheese, and creamy bacon mayo on a new, toasted "signature" bun.

It goes for $4.89 in my area but I received this one courtesy of Jack in the Box.

While I'm all for bacon and burgers, the Bacon & Swiss Buttery Jack turned out to be less impressive than the Classic Buttery Jack and, interestingly, it's not for any lack of flavor or quality but rather because there are too many strong flavors competing.

To start, the seasoned beef patty has a notable seasoned flavor similar to Jack's Sirloin burgers. It was flavorful and relatively moist. It goes well with the melted herb butter but the butter wasn't very noticeable here over the bacon and bacon mayo (to be clear, it's actual butter and not buttery spread like at most competitors).

While Jack's hickory-smoked bacon comes in the typical fast food thinness, it packs an enjoyable smoky, porky flavor. It wasn't exactly crispy but it was good. The bacon mayo was sharp and salty on its own but accentuated and added to the bacony goodness.

The single Swiss came sliced quite finely and contributed a vague creaminess. I'm sure it's nice enough on it's own but due to the thinness and the punch of the other components, it's mostly wasted in the Bacon & Swiss Buttery Jack.

The new signature bun was just as excellent as when I had the Classic Buttery Jack. It wasn't as well-toasted as last time but still developed a hearty crust, while maintaining its sweet, almost delicately soft interior.

Overall, Jack in the Box's Bacon & Swiss Buttery Jack was still very enjoyable especially if you like bacon burgers, but several of the key components, namely the Swiss and the butter, are largely lost in the shuffle. For that reason, I prefer the Classic over the Bacon & Swiss Buttery Jack as the more balanced, and better, of Jack's two new premium burgers.
