Review: McDonald's - Mozzarella Sticks

McDonald's Mozzarella Sticks feature mozzarella cheese breaded with wheat flour, onion, garlic, and a pinch of salt. They come with marinara sauce for dipping.

I picked up three for $1.19. They're also available as part of the new McPick 2 value menu.

Someone mentioned in the comments when I first wrote about these that they're baked rather than fried. Having tried them, they do indeed seem baked; although they might have been fried prior to being frozen. They're lightly crispy but didn't have that slightly greasy crunch.

The breading offered a very mild blend of salt, onion, and garlic and the mozzarella inside actually had a bit of bitterness to it, which is to say it actually tasted like mozzarella rather than generically creamy.

Unfortunately, the cheese was more warmed than hot and didn't get close to mustering that gooey, stretchy goodness that all mozzarella sticks should deliver. I don't know if it's because they don't heat it enough, if they just hold it at too low a temperature, or if they're just afraid of people singeing their tongues, but it was disappointing.

The marinara sauce was thick, robust, sweet, and herby. It added a nice flavor to the sticks and was similar to pizza sauce.

Overall, McDonald's Mozzarella Sticks were a miss for me simply because the cheese wasn't melted. Just apply more heat please.
