Review: Wendy's - Dave's Single

Wendy's Dave's Single cheeseburger features a new premium bun and new mayo along with a patty made from fresh beef, lettuce, tomato, red onion, crinkle-cut pickle, and ketchup.

It goes for $3.99 but I received this one courtesy of Wendy's.

They've gone back to the foil wrapper of old (maybe for a touch of nostalgia):

In case you're wondering, the Dave's Single is mostly the same as the previous Hot 'N Juicy Single Cheeseburger (you can check out my previous review here). The only difference is the bun and new mayo.

The new bun is meant to be "lighter, fluffier, and hotter" and while I'm not sure about hotter, it's definitely fluffier and lighter, but perhaps too much so. The bun was so spongy and squishy that it felt quite flimsy. While it actually kept together well enough, it felt like it would fall apart in my hands. Taste-wise, I didn't detect anything different. I still prefer the egg bun they offered a few iterations back.

The mayo didn't seem appreciably different to me and the rest of the burger was much the same. The burger patty had a nice coarse grind, a slight crust, and was fairly juicy. The produce was fresh and crisp. The onion was particularly notable for a mild bite and broke cleanly.

Overall, Wendy's Dave's Single made for a solid and enjoyable burger but the new bun detracts from the experience. I guess you might like it if you want a bun you can sleep on (i.e. it's pillowy and very much so).
