Review: Taco Bell - Naked Egg Taco

Taco Bell's Naked Egg Taco features a fried egg shell filled with a choice of bacon or sausage, plus crispy potatoes, nacho cheese sauce, and shredded cheese.

I bought one with bacon and another with sausage for $2.19 a piece.

As far as the two tacos that I bought, the fried egg shell can be hit or miss. One was overcooked and dry (although it did have a bit more crispiness to it) while the other was soft but fully set. The shells are made with a whole (mostly unbroken) egg so you do get a portion with that distinct yolk flavor.

As far as cheese goes, you're mostly getting the gooey texture and flavor of nacho cheese with the odd sprinkling of mild shredded cheddar. It goes well with the potatoes, which are flavorful but never crispy from my experience.

Between the bacon and sausage, I prefer the smokiness and stronger flavor of the bacon to the lightly seasoned sausage. The bacon isn't crispy at all though and feels more like little bits of very smoky ham.

You might think the fried egg shell would be more portable than, say, a breakfast bowl, but between the oil from frying and the nacho cheese, it might be cleaner eating a breakfast bowl.

Overall, Taco Bell's Naked Egg Taco are enjoyable enough to eat but don't really add anything to the Taco Bell breakfast menu beyond a gimmicky form factor. I guess if you want to go for something low in carbs, you could have the potatoes replaces with eggs and push the concept a little further.
