Panda Express Tests New Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken

A bucket of Panda Express' Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken.
Panda Express is testing new Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken in select cities for a limited time.

Inspired by the popcorn chicken found in Taiwan's night markets, the new dish features bite-sized boneless dark meat chicken coated in a light, crispy-fried breading. The chicken is then tossed in a proprietary dry spice blend featuring tamarind, tomato, garlic, and onion, plus crispy fried kale, the chain's twist on the traditional basil that's typically fried with the chicken. Each order comes with a side of house-made Chili Crisp Aioli that the chain describes as "creamy" and "subtly spicy."

Panda Express' Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken is priced the same as the chain's regular entrees.

For a limited time, you can get a limited-edition bucket designed by Frankie Gaw for free with the purchase of a large à la carte order of Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken at participating test locations, while supplies last. Frankie Gaw is a Taiwanese American designer, author, and food creator.

You can find the dish now at participating locations across Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, Phoenix, Reno, and select surrounding markets. You can find a list of participating locations at https://www.pandaexpress.com/promo/tpc2026.

Traditionally, Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken consists of marinated dark meat chicken tossed in a light coating of starch and double-fried for extra crispiness. It is then often tossed in a spicy seasoning blend.
