Review: Popeyes - Chicken Dippers and Signature Sauce

An order of Chicken Dippers and a dipping cup of Signature Sauce.

Popeyes' Chicken Dippers are thin strips of chicken breast meat battered in the chain's Louisiana garlic and spice blend and then fried until crispy. The chain's new Signature Sauce "combines the bold flavors of the Louisiana 'holy trinity'; bell pepper, celery, and onion, along with garlic and a dash of hot sauce for just the right amount of heat."

An order of Chicken Dippers cost me $4.99.

They came in a fry container that looked a little light on the chicken, but they packed quite a bit of chicken in there:

The flavor and flaky breading are the same as Popeyes' regular chicken strips/tenders, only cut into small strips. The pieces varied in size and shape. Some were straight while others twisted and or curled during cooking. Most were fairly meaty but slightly dry. My batch was warm but not particularly fresh as the breading had softened a bit and the chicken had started to firm up. Popeyes once offered a mostly identical product called "Wicked Chicken."

The new Signature Sauce was the more novel and interesting of the two products. It had a creamy mayo and bell pepper base that reminded me of Taco Bell's new Bell Sauce, but with a distinctly Cajun flavor and a solid spicy kick that was very enjoyable. It came in a shallow, round container that made for easy dipping.

Overall, Popeyes Chicken Dippers and Signature Sauce were nice enough on the chicken front and excellent as to the sauce, which probably goes great with the chain's regular tenders and chicken sandwiches.
