Review: Papa Johns - Garlic 5-Cheese Crust Pizza

Papa Johns' Garlic 5-Cheese Crust Pizza next to a quarter.

Papa Johns' Garlic 5-Cheese Crust Pizza is a limited-time offer featuring a hand-tossed pizza ringed at the edge with garlic-parmesan sauce and an Italian 5-cheese blend (parmesan, romano, asiago, fontina, and provolone).

A large 1-topping Garlic 5-Cheese Crust Pizza costs $12.99 (it's $11.99 in most other states) near me, but I received this courtesy of Papa Johns. I chose sausage as my one topping.

The 5-cheese blend resulted in a thin, crispy shell that covered most of the crust's edge, which was nice, as Papa John's regular crust isn't usually crispy in my experience. It offered an enjoyable, toasty cheese flavor paired with garlic.

Papa Johns previously put out a similar crust called "Garlic Parmesan Crust." The Garlic 5-Cheese Crust was heavier on the toasty cheese, though.

On a side note, the pizzas I've gotten from Papa Johns are typically evenly browned on the bottom, but this particular pizza was very light on the bottom, even though the top was quite browned and there was leopard spotting on the cheese. I'm guessing something went wrong with the bake. Maybe a temperature issue at the bottom of the oven? The result was a softer crust than usual as well as a bit of gumminess.

Besides the baking issue, the Garlic 5-Cheese Crust made for good eating. The cheese and garlic brought welcome flavor and texture to the pizza.
