Review: Trader Joe's - Strawberries & Cream Cloud Cake

The box fo Trader Joe's Strawberries & Cream Cloud Cake.

Trader Joe's Strawberry & Cream Cloud Cake features "two layers of sponge cake with custard filling decorated with whipped cream and strawberries."

It's found in the frozen section, and a 17.64-oz cake cost me $6.49.

I thawed the cake in the fridge overnight per the instructions on the box, but this is what it looked like still frozen:

And here's how it looked after thawing:

While the Strawberry & Cream Cloud Cake comes from Sweden, it's very similar to an Asian-style strawberry cake. Mostly from the combination of fluffy sponge cake, whipped cream, and strawberries, but also because it wasn't too sweet. There were two key differences, however.

First, the cake is slightly sweeter than a similar Asian-style strawberry cake, as the strawberries are mixed with a sweet sauce here, versus just fresh strawberries. Given that they are frozen, the texture is different, but I enjoyed the sweetness and tart contrast between the strawberries and the rest of the cake.

Secondly, there's the layer of custard. It was a very thin layer and didn't make much of an impression on the custard front. What it did do was serve as a delivery vehicle for an almond flavor similar to marzipan.

Overall, Trader Joe's Strawberries & Cream Cloud Cake made for a light and refreshing dessert that really embraces its name. It's especially nice if you prefer your cakes on the less sweet side.
