Review: Taco Bell - Milk Bar Birthday Cake Empanada

Packaging for Taco Bell's Milk Bar Birthday Cake Empanada.

Taco Bell's Milk Bar Birthday Cake Empanada features a crispy-fried pastry shell with birthday cake batter filling, topped with pink frosting and rainbow sprinkles.

I bought one for $3.69.

Taco Bell's Milk Bar Birthday Cake Empanada next to a quarter.

The outside had that nice, crackly crust that's satisfying to bite into. The pink frosting was more like icing with a liquidy consistency. It had a strawberry flavor that I wasn't expecting and felt un-birthday-cake-like. It wasn't bad, though. I'm guessing it was for some contrast, but if that's the way they were going, a more berry-forward glaze would have added a more vibrant note.

There was a generous amount of filling inside, and it looked like whipped cream but was denser. It had a nice note of vanilla, and it was creamy with a slight cream cheese taste, but it was not too rich.

I'm not sure if there was a shortage or if whoever was decorating my empanada was feeling a bit miserly, but there were very few sprinkles on it. It's a shame because they added a nice contrasting crunch the few times I came across one.

Overall, Taco Bell's Milk Bar Birthday Cake Empanada was enjoyable in both taste and texture, but the "pink frosting" threw me off a little with the strawberry note. It made it feel less birthday cake-y. Still, it's worth trying if you're curious.
