I paid $5 for the limited-time bowl.
The Cheesy Nuggy Gravy Bowl is KFC's and Chef Matty Matheson's take on poutine.
At first glance, I thought they might have forgotten the gravy in my bowl, but a closer examination revealed that the fries had absorbed much of the gravy. While the fries weren't crispy at all, they were thick enough to hold up well against the gravy. Additionally, the savory flavors of the two meshed very well, resulting in a surprising depth.
On the other hand, the Kentucky Fried Nuggets and the Cheese Curds retained a good deal of crispiness. The chicken nuggets were moist and meaty, but were a bit on the firm side. Flavor-wise, they're meant for dipping and don't offer much in the way of seasoning beyond a rather heavy dose of salt. The Cheese Curds were much better, with a similar flavor to mozzarella but with slightly more flavor. They were somewhat melted inside and, as they cooled, delivered a bit of the squeak that cheese curds are known for. Between the two, I preferred eating the nuggets alone, while the Cheese Curds went well with the fries and gravy.
Overall, the KFC Matty's Cheesy Nuggy Gravy Bowl delivered a delightful take on poutine in a country where poutine is a little bit hard to come by (at least here in Los Angeles) and certainly isn't on offer at any national fast-food chain.
