Burger King's new "Better" Whopper features some slight improvements, including a new bun, new mayo, and a clamshell box instead of a wrapper.
It's normally $7.99 in my area (Los Angeles), but I used the Whopper Wednesday deal to get it for $3.99. As an aside, the pricing at my local Burger King is a bit weird. A Whopper is $7.99, a Double Whopper is $9.19, and a Triple Whopper is $11.69. This means a second patty costs $1.20, while a third costs $2.40. Also, a Whopper Jr. is $4.59, but a Double Whopper Jr. (it's the same thing, only with a second patty) is $7.99(?!). That's $3.40 extra for a second small beef patty.
I ordered the Whopper cut in half with a beef patty that came fresh out of the broiler (it's an option when ordering through the app).
The new bun is the most noticeable change to the Whopper. It's a glossier bun that's slightly moister and softer. It gave the burger a more premium look and feel. The new mayo may have been slightly creamier than before, but I write that with a slight squint to my eyes and pursed lips.
The clamshell seemed to make the Whooper less squished, although it was still slightly compacted from having them cut the burger in half.
The beef patty was piping hot and juicy, but didn't otherwise stand out in taste or texture. The grill marks were light, and the patty lacked that charred smokiness you hope to get from cooking over an open flame. It was pretty average for a fast-food burger patty.
The lettuce, onion, and tomatoes were sub-par. They lacked flavor, and the lettuce was slightly wilted. My local Burger King does not have a good track record of produce quality. The pickles were okay, though.
I liked the balance of the mayo and ketchup in my burger. It wasn't too heavy with a measured dose of sweet, tangy, and richness.
Overall, Burger King's new "Better" Whopper was only slightly better than before and middling as far as fast-food burgers go. I really wished it tasted more flame-broiled.
