Review: Klondike - Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Bar

The Klondike Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Bar is a relatively recent variation on your standard chocolate and vanilla Klondike bar where instead of vanilla, there's mint chocolate chip ice cream instead and the chocolate is dark instead of milk. Nice, right?

A box of 6 bars goes for $5.29 at my local supermarket but is around $3.00 to $4.00 on sale.

When I was a kid, I was not fond of the dark chocolate. I remember those variety bars of mini Hershey's bars with the Krackle, Mr. Goodbars, and Special Dark; the poor Special Darks were only eaten as a last resort.

Nowadays though I prefer the deeper flavor of dark chocolate (at least sometimes) which makes the Klondike Mint Chocolate Chip a bit more interesting than the run-of-the-mill variety.

The dark chocolate layer is actually pretty thick and the stronger notes pair well with the cool mint chocolate chip ice cream inside. I do have to point out (and you can see from the picture) that there's not much in the way of actual chocolate chip in the ice cream; it's more like tiny specks of chocolate of the "if-you-squint-real-hard-it-vaguely-resembles-a-chocolate-chip" kind. It really should be called "Mint Chocolate Klondike." I don't mind it though as the thick dark chocolate shell provides plenty of that chocolate chip texture.

Also there's the novelty factor, off the top of my head I know of no other bar that offers the mint chip ice cream though you can always go for the scooped stuff.

Dark chocolate and mint ice cream in an ice cream bar. I like it!

  1. Looks tasty.

I look upon the product with desire. Near-lust for that which I can not have but I did partake of Klondike Bars years ago.

I wonder if the masses will desire the mint-type ice cream?

If I was an exec making a marketing decision I believe I would have offered a "butter brickle" version.

  2. I really like this ice cream. I don't know where you go shopping but at Walmart the six pack is always less than $3

  3. Walmart is usually cheaper than most places. I live in California, which sometimes makes a difference. I think the lowest I've ever seen these on sale was two for $5.
