A Guide to In-N-Out's Secret Menu

Here's a quick reference to In-N-Out's Secret Menu. It's basically a list of custom orders that customers have ordered enough times to warrant being keyed into their ordering system (most other chains don't have such items in their system so it can be hit or miss if you ask for "secret menu" items. Not so at In-N-Out).

Sometimes, because of this blog, I eat fast food items I wouldn't normally eat because they're either too big or they just don't sound very good to me.  Granted sometimes I'm delighted and surprised, but this review isn't for one of those items.  This review is about something I unequivocally love to eat: the In-N-Out Cheeseburger.

Review: In-N-Out - Secret Menu - Animal Style

Probably the most popular burger variation at In-N-Out is the vaunted "Animal Style" which is a burger of your choice with hand-leafed lettuce, tomatoes slices, a beef patty (or two or three) with mustard seared in during grilling, pickles, extra spread (thousand island), and grilled onions. Pictured above is a In-N-Out Hamburger Animal Style which comes in at a reasonable $1.75.

Review: In-N-Out - Secret Menu - Protein Style

Another "secret" menu item at In N Out, "Protein Style" means to get a burger without carbs (i.e. the bun), instead you get a shell of iceburg lettuce around your burger.  So a Double Double "Protein Style" is two all-beef hamburger patties, two slices of American cheese, onions, tomatoes, and "spread" (In N Out's version of Thousand Island) wrapped in hand-leafed lettuce.  It will run you the same as a regular Double Double at $2.99.

Review: In-N-Out - Secret Menu - French Fries Well Done

In-N-Out French fries are made in house from fresh Kennebec potatoes and only come in one size for $1.29.  What some customers don't know is that In-N-Out will cook their fries to whatever doneness you like.  I like to get mine "well" or "well done."

Five Guys is a popular burger chain with East Coast origins that not-too-long ago finally landed in California. I finally tried one of their Little Bacon Cheeseburgers recently for $4.69.

Review: In-N-Out - Cheeseburger McDonald's Style

Since you can have them make your burger any way you like at In-N-Out, I decided to try an In-N-Out take on an old classic, the McDonald's Cheeseburger. I call it the In-N-Out Cheeseburger McDonald's Style.

It's the same price as a regular Cheeseburger at $2.15.

Secret Menu: In-N-Out - Whole Grilled Onions and Extra Toasted Bun

A few of the options you can get at In-N-Out include getting a whole slice of onion grilled ("WhGR") and getting your bun extra toasted ("X toast").

I don't believe a lot of people know about it so I decided to try both on a Double Double (I also went with no tomato). There's no added charge for either option

News: Taco Bell Continues Protein Menu Test

While some burger chains, notably In-N-Out, offer their burgers in a "low-carb" configuration, Taco Bell hasn't really explored the option until recently with the bowl option of their Power Fresco Menu test in a few Southern California location. The menu is part of Taco Bell's efforts to include more better-for-you options and features a lower calorie, more protein theme.

It looks like the test did well (or at least well enough) and they'll be doing a small market test out in Dayton, Ohio starting July 25, 2013.
