Review: Wienerschnitzel - Chicken Schnitzel Sandwiches

Wienerschnitzel's Chicken Schnitzel Sandwiches mark the first time that the chain has offered schnitzel and feature a boneless chicken patty breaded with potato chips. The sandwiches come in three varieties: Classic Ranch, BBQ Bacon, and Blazin' Bacon Guacamole.

The prices for the sandwiches are my local Wienerschnitzel's was $3.69, $4.09, and $4.69, respectively but I received these courtesy of Wienerschnitzel.

The Classic Ranch comes topped with ranch sauce, pickles, lettuce, and tomato; the BBQ Bacon includes barbecue sauce, sauteed onions, cheese, and bacon; and the Blazin' Bacon Guacamole features spicy Blazin' sauce, lettuce, tomato, guacamole, and bacon. All sandwiches include the same chicken patty and bun.

The chicken wasn't the flattened chicken filet I was hoping for but seemed instead to be a ground white meat chicken patty that's exactly the same diameter as the bun. The crust turned out pretty nicely with a substantial crunch but it wasn't so thick that it was hard. It also managed the occasional slight note of fried potato. The chicken inside was moist but not quite juicy.

The bun was mostly your standard issue plain fast food bun although the crust was slightly more resilient than most.

The Classic Ranch felt like the plainest of the bunch with fairly fresh produce and a bit of extra tanginess from the ranch and crunchy pickles.

The BBQ Bacon turned out pretty nicely. The BBQ sauce was a bit too tangy on its own but mellowed out among all the other ingredients. Unfortunately, the flavor of the cheese and bacon became superfluous as a result. The onions were really nice though. They had that nice watery pop to them that you get when you hit that sweet point between over and under cooking them and made up for the bacon's lack of crispiness. Somehow, the chicken remained crispy under the BBQ sauce.

The Blazin' Bacon Guacamole was my favorite of the three. The bacon still wasn't crispy but the smoky flavor came through. The medium tangy heat of the Blazin' sauce was complemented nicely by the rich, butteriness of the guacamole.

Overall, Wienerschnitzel's Chicken Schnitzel Sandwiches offer a nice variety that has something for most tastes. My preferences from first to last are: the Blazin' Bacon Guacamole, the BBQ Bacon, and then the Classic Ranch.
