Review: Frosted Apple Fritter Pop-Tarts

Frosted Apple Fritter Pop-Tarts are toasted pastries with an apple-flavored filling that are drizzled with white icing and meant to mimic the donut of the same name.

A 13.5-oz box of 8 toaster pastries carries a suggested retail price of $2.99, but I received this courtesy of Kellogg's.

The Frosted Apple Fritter Pop-Tarts appeared to have the standard Pop-Tarts pastry crust, which was a little powdery and crumbly when untoasted but flaky and lightly crisp when toasted. There was a richness to the pastry crust but no buttery flavor. The crust itself is not very sweet.

While the Frosted Apple Fritter Pop-Tarts may have been less sweet than other varieties of Pop-Tarts owing to the frosting drizzle, they were still quite sweet overall. The apple filling was especially sweet and lacked any notes of cinnamon, despite the spice being listed in the ingredients list. The filling was jammy and somewhat sticky in consistency once toasted. The frosting drizzle was pleasantly crunchy.

Overall, Frosted Apple Fritter Pop-Tarts were enjoyable but missed the donut mark for me, as they simply tasted like apple-flavored Pop-Tarts. I guess it would be hard to really evoke the flavor of airy, fried dough in Pop-Tart form, though some stronger cinnamon notes would have improved the taste a good deal.
