Review: Lou Malnati's - Sausage Deep Dish Pizza

Lou Malnati's Sausage Deep Dish Pizza features a Chicago-style, deep-dish pizza topped/filled with Lou's lean sausage, mozzarella cheese, vine-ripened tomato sauce, and Romano cheese.

A two-pack of 9-inch, 1.72-lb pizzas costs $76.99 (including shipping) but my brother ordered a number of them and gave me one. If you're not near one of their actual restaurants (which are located mostly in Illinois but also with several locations in Arizona, Wisconsin, and Indiana), they ship the pizzas nationwide.

The pizza (pie?) baked in about 45 minutes in the oven and turned out very nicely.

The crust of the pizza was crunchy with a fairly tight, slightly oily, slightly flaky crumb. Beyond the texture, it was very sturdy and held up quite well against the heavy and moist fillings/toppings of the pie.

Inside, the pizza played up simple flavors. There was a chunky tomato sauce that's basically just tomato and salt, mildly-seasoned sausage, rich and gooey mozzarella cheese, and a sprinkle of Romano for salt and bite. There was also a bit of oregano thrown in with the tang and natural sweetness of the tomatoes, which highlighted that this was indeed a pizza rather than a pie.

The sausage was interesting, as it was an unbroken, giant patty rather than sausage crumbles. It was juicy and quite springy, with guaranteed sausage in every bite due to the construction.

Overall, Lou Malnati's Sausage Deep Dish Pizza made for a tasty meal with a nice mix of textures, plenty of stretchy cheese, and simple but enjoyable flavors. If you've never had a Chicago-style pizza, it really does blur the line between pizza and pie and makes for fairly heavy eating.
