Review: Domino's - New Wings (2020)

Domino's recently updated their chicken wing offering to be "new and improved" but haven't really explained how so I thought I'd give them a try to see how they're better. I went with plain, unsauced wings to get the best sense of the chicken itself and went with Hot Buffalo sauce as the included sauce for dipping.

As part of the wing update, they're now offering 10 wings for $7.99 when you order for carryout. It's a fairly good discount over the other Big Four pizza chains (Little Caesars, Papa John's, and Pizza Hut).

The wings are lightly breaded and then oven baked. As is often the case of baked wings, even without being covered in sauce, there was very little in the way of crispiness--just a few odd edges here and there. The skin was a bit like gelatin and gave way easily when bitten. On the plus side, they reheated well and crisped up a bit in the toaster oven without drying out.

If I had to guess, I'd say the wings appear to have been wet-brined at some point. There was an enjoyable, lightly-seasoned flavor from skin to the bone but, while juicy, the meat was just a touch lacking in texture (i.e. it may have been marinated for too long).

The Buffalo sauce offered familiar blend of tangy medium heat. It's fairly traditional and I wouldn't mistake it for something else.

Overall, Domino's new wings are good for a tasty, seasoned profile that neutral enough to take one whatever sauce you go with but, not unexpectedly, don't turn out so well on the crispy front. They might crisp up better baked on a wire rack or if they were given another run through the oven (although they also might just end up dry and not all that much crispier for it). Compared to what I vaguely remember from the previous version, these are more flavorful and not as oddly plumped.
