Review: Tyson - Original Chicken Breast Sandwich

Tyson's Original Chicken Breast Sandwich features four individually-wrapped "breaded, portioned chicken breast fillets with rib meat on artisan buns." They also come in a Spicy version.

A 24-oz box of four sandwiches costs $7 to $8 but I received this courtesy of Tyson.

I prepped the sandwich in the air-fryer. It took 10 minutes for the chicken and the instructions said to throw in the bun for the last three minutes.

Chicken was thick and juicy but not whole-cut. It seemed to be a combination of ground and small chicken breast pieces, which makes for fairly uniform patties but generally lacks that stringy chicken texture. It's a bit coarser and less uniform than the Tyson's chicken patties however (as well as generally bigger with excellent bun coverage). Beyond the texture, the chicken offered a lightly-seasoned flavor and a crispy breading out of the air fryer.

After three minutes in the air fryer, the bun turned out soft inside but a bit too toasted outside. I tried another one for just a minute but it was still a lot like a thick piece of toast.

Additionally, the crumbs from both the bread and the chicken tend to stick to both sides of the bun so you want to brush them off unless you like the added graininess.

I tried grilling one of the bun with butter on a pan but it was still a bit frozen in the middle. If you're aiming for toasted on the inner side while the crust side is still soft, microwaving it and then toasting or grilling it in a pan might be your best bet.

With only the bun and chicken provided, you definitely want to add your own sauce. I went with Kewpie mayo, which is a brand of Japanese mayo that is a bit sweeter and more savory. It worked well flavor-wise and added some extra moisture.

Taken altogether, Tyson's Original Chicken Breast Sandwich turned out pretty well. While the chicken is more of a patty than what I would consider a filet, it's thick, juicy, and crispy on the outside. The bun added a bit of convenience since you'd otherwise be buying a pack of buns and bag of chicken patties otherwise. At less than $2 a pop, it's cheaper and a good deal more substantial than a McChicken (although without the peppery heat).
