Wendy's Cajun Crunch Spicy Chicken Sandwich features a crispy-fried spicy chicken breast filet, spicy mustard sauce, Cajun crispy-fried onions, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, and crinkle-cut pickles on a toasted premium bun. The spicy mustard sauce has a mustardy mayo base spiked with cayenne and horseradish.
I paid $7.19 for the sandwich.
The new components here are the spicy mustard sauce and Cajun crispy-fried onions. Interestingly, they were less spicy than the spicy chicken breast filet and did surprisingly little to push the heat up. What they did impart was an extra dose of seasoned flavor and a tangy, mild note of mustard and horseradish.
Beyond the heat, the spicy chicken filet sported a good crispiness on the outside and was moist but not juicy inside. It was pretty thick with good bun coverage.
As with the heat, the crispiness of the Cajun fried onions was like a shadow of the crunch of the chicken filet.
The pepper jack cheese was well melted, but I couldn't pick up the heat and flavor of the peppers over everything else. Mostly, it contributed a creamy richness.
The pickles added a watery crunch and an additional sourness, while the lettuce wilted from the heat and didn't do much for the sandwich at all.
Taken altogether, Wendy's Cajun Crunch Spicy Chicken Sandwich didn't really move the needle for me. The Cajun aspect was fairly weak, and the crunch isn't much different from Wendy's regular Spicy Chicken Sandwich. It made for a busy sandwich but wasn't any better for it.
