Frozen Friday: Claim Jumper - Salisbury Steak Dinner

Claim Jumper's Salisbury Steak Dinner box
Salisbury steak has been a TV dinner staple for as long as I can remember. Salisbury steak was invented by an American physician believe it or not. It's a meat patty made with a blend of minced beef and varying ingredients. I received this Claim Jumper's Salisbury Steak Dinner courtesy of Claim Jumper (Actually, I got six coupons from them for any Claim Jumper frozen food item, so if you have any requests on any you'd like to see reviewed, now's the time). It would normally cost $3.99 at my local supermarket and probably $3 to $3.50 on sale.

Claim Jumper's Salisbury Steak Dinner is a substantial pound (16 ounces) of food featuring a Salisbury steak with gravy, macaroni & cheese, and broccoli.

As far as frozen dinners go, Salisbury steak has always been a staple for me.  I think of it as meat loaf but with a brown gravy rather than a tomato sauce.  Claim Jumper's Salisbury Steak was pretty good, it actually had a bit of char to it on the surface,it had meaty texture, and it was juicy.  It was also a substantial piece of meat.  It is however, a little bit salty to be eating with macaroni & cheese.  I would have preferred a more traditional bed of mashed potatoes to balance it out.

The gravy (which came in a separate bag and I used sparingly) was a creamy brown gravy rather than the thin brown (almost au jus) gravy you see on the box.  It would have been nice with some mashed potatoes (It you couldn't tell already, I like mashed potatoes).

I'm not a big fan of macaroni & cheese and didn't care for it too much growing up.  This mac was slightly better than the norm; it has a bit of a Cheddar bite to it and the macaroni pasta was bigger than normal and had ridges along it.

The broccoli was normal and typical of what you get in the frozen food aisle.

Despite being a pound of food, at 640, Claim Jumper's Salisbury Steak Dinner has slightly less calories than a Burger King Whopper (670).  The amount of sodium (1730mg) isn't a surprise with the mac & cheese and the Salisbury steak and gravy (although I'm sure it's a bit less if you don't use the gravy or just use a little like I tend to do).
