Review: El Pollo Loco - Loco Chicken Nachos

El Pollo Loco's Loco Chicken Nachos feature flame-grilled chicken, guacamole, corn, queso blanco, creamy cilantro sauce, and fried serrano peppers over tortilla chips.

It's normally $6.29 for an order but I had a coupon that knocked the price down to $5.

It's somewhat of an issue when an order of nachos doesn't have enough cheese and so it was here. There was about an even amount of queso blanco and creamy cilantro when there really should be at least that much cheese for there to be just enough for every chip. That being said, the cheese was smooth and thick with a nice flavor to it. Beyond the standard mild, creamy cheesiness, there was a slightly sharp cheddar quality to it.

The creamy cilantro adds a mayo-y tang and slight note of cilantro, while the serrranos added some serious heat when bitten into (a little too much for me). With El Pollo Loco's complementary condiment bar, you can also add onions, cilantro, and various salsas as you see fit.

The chicken was a little dry and cut a little big for nachos (you get some very meaty bites but maybe only enough for a third of the chips or so), but were nicely seasoned. The chips were fairly thick and crunchy. They held up very well against the toppings and sauces.

Corn is probably not a typical nacho topping but it added a nice texture and crunch to the festivities. I probably won't be adding corn to any nachos I make anytime soon but I wouldn't turn my nose up at it if I happened upon a plate of nachos with corn on top.

The guac was one of the weaker elements. It was a little thin and not so fresh. I didn't notice it much.

Overall, El Pollo Loco's Loco Chicken Nachos would have made for a fairly nice plate of nachos if not for the glaring lack of cheese.
