Review: KFC - Chicken & Donut Sandwich

KFC's Chicken & Donut Sandwich features two warm glazed donuts sandwiching an Extra Crispy fried chicken filet.

I paid $5.99 for the sandwich.

The donuts were hot and appeared to have been fried in the restaurant at some point as they were crisp at the surface and fairly oily. My guess is they either fried up pre-cooked frozen donuts or frozen dough as the donut were denser than is typical but squishy soft inside. Even though it's oilier and denser than a regular yeast donut, a hot donut with a crisped crust is really nice.

They added the glaze while putting together the sandwich and it pooled quite a bit on the bottom, which pretty much guaranteed sticky fingers when I picked up the sandwich to eat it.

The chicken filet had a crunchy and somewhat flaky crust but was a little dry inside. It was a little overshadowed flavor-wise by both the donuts and the glaze. For fried chicken, it was too sweet from the glaze that dripped down from the top donut--like dessert-territory sweet. Additionally, the combination of chicken-flavor oil and fried dough-flavored oil did not go well together at all.

When it comes down to it, I found KFC's Chicken & Donut Sandwich better enjoyed separately. I really liked the donuts by themselves though. I think Krispy Kreme is the only other place that I can get a hot donut around here and my local KFC is much closer. Also, there's a novelty to the different textures of the KFC donut that I found interesting.
