Review: Krispy Kreme - Butterfinger Original Filled and Fudge Cake Donuts

Krispy Kreme's Butterfinger Original Filled Donut takes an Original Glazed donut and fills it with Peanut Butter Chocolate Kreme, and then tops it with a layer of Butterfinger icing plus Butterfinger pieces and a chocolate drizzle., while the Butterfinger Fudge Cake Donut features a chocolate cake donut dipped in chocolate icing, topped with Butterfinger pieces and a dollop of Peanut Butter Chocolate Kreme.

They're $1.79 each in my neck of the woods but I received these courtesy of Krispy Kreme.

There appeared to be a bit of a snafu with my Butterfinger Original Filled donut as it was filled with regular chocolate Kreme rather than Peanut Butter Chocolate Kreme. Fortunately, the Butterfinger Fudge Cake Donut came with a sizable dollop on top that gave me an ample taste of the new Kreme.

The Peanut Butter Chocolate Kreme was mostly peanut buttery, slightly chocolaty, and surprisingly salty. The salt was actually a very good thing as it cut against the plethora of sweet components of the Butterfinger Fudge Cake Donut.

The chocolate cake donut was moist and had a nice, rich chocolaty flavor, while the icing was lightly chocolaty and mostly sweet. The Butterfinger pieces added a muted version of the candy bar's signature crispety crunch due, I think, to air exposure. They also added more peanut butter and milk chocolate notes.

The Butterfinger Original Filled Donut could have really used that missing Peanut Butter Chocolate Kreme as it was the sweeter of the two by a good margin. There was less of a donut buffer here as the ring donut comes filled with Kreme and the soft, fluffy quality means there's a good amount less donut by weight. Also, the donut comes both glazed and iced. The glaze is the classic sweet version that Krispy Kreme is known for, while the icing was mainly sugary with very light peanut butter notes. As with the Butterfinger Fudge Cake Donut, the Butterfinger pieces added the requisite taste and texture of the candy bar.

Of the two Krispy Kreme Butterfinger Donuts, my preference veers strongly towards the Fudge Cake Donut which offered a more balanced take on the classic chocolate and peanut butter combination. The Butterfinger Original Filled Donut without the correct Kreme was way too sweet for me and not chocolate and peanut buttery enough. I imagine with the Peanut Butter Chocolate Kreme that it would still be too sweet but would be much better on the peanut butter front.
