Review: Krispy Kreme - 2021 Thanksgiving Collection Donuts

Krispy Kreme's 2021 Thanksgiving Collection of donuts includes four donuts: the Pecan Pie Donut, Cranberry Orange Donut, Dutch Apple Pie, and The Gobbler Donut.

A Thanksgiving dozen donuts goes for $16.99 but I received these courtesy of Krispy Kreme.

The Pecan Pie Donut features an Original Glazed Donut dipped in pecan pie filling, candied pecans, and pie crust crumbles. It basically tastes like pecan pie on a soft, airy donut, which is to say it was quite sweet with a caramelly pecan flavor and a light crunch from the pecans and pie crust.

The Cranberry Orange Donut is a yeast shell donut with a cranberry filling, dipped in cranberry orange icing, and drizzled with red and orange icing. The filling on my particular donut was a small dollop in the very center (it probably varies though) and was more of a dried cranberry-type flavor as it lacked the slight bitterness of cranberry. The cranberry orange icing offered a nice combination of orange zest and cranberry flavors that was very enjoyable.

The Dutch Apple Pie Donut takes your typical apple-filled donut and dips it in caramel icing before adding some cinnamon streusel cookie crumbles and an icing lattice on top. The apple pie filling, like the Cranberry Orange Donut, was only in the very middle but was mostly tart diced apples. The toppings gave it a bit of a caramel apple feeling as well as a bit of crunch.

The Gobbler Donut is a heart-shaped donut dipped in chocolate icing, decorated with chocolate Kreme, topped with Thanksgiving sprinkles and a "Turkey Face" fondant piece. Two pretzels were stuck into the donut as "turkey legs." It could have done without the pretzels as they were stale and quite soft especially the portion that was inside of the donut. Beside the pretzels, it was a pretty typical chocolate-iced donut with some added creaminess and chocolaty notes from the Kreme. The fondant piece was pretty tasteless with a soft, slightly chewy texture, which is to say, it was like any other fondant I've come across.

Of the four donuts, I enjoyed the Cranberry Orange Donut as its sweetness was balanced out with the tartness of the fruits and the addition of orange added a tasty novelty factor. The Pecan Pie was pretty dead-on but I find pecan pie in general to be a bit too sweet. The Dutch Apple Pie was good as well but was also very sweet and a little too familiar. The Gobbler Donut was mostly for looks. All four donuts made for some good eats, except for the pretzel "legs" of the Gobbler.
