Review: Trader Joe's - Pumpkin Cobbler

Trader Joe's Pumpkin Cobbler features a layer of buttery streusel and pecans over a layer of pumpkin filling.

I paid $4.99 for a 16-oz package.

I'm not sure how it is in other areas, but Trader Joe's Pumpkin Cobbler has been hard to get a hold in my neighborhood. I'm told each store gets daily shipments but they were all sold out at several stores when I called around (in the early afternoon). Luckily, I managed to find a store that had one left in stock, a few days later, and was able to reserve it to pick up on the same day.

For the most part, Trader Joe's Pumpkin Cobbler was like pumpkin pie without the pie crust, which could be good or bad depending on your take on pie crust. It also means there's not much of a texture change between the streusel, which was mostly sweet crumbs in various sizes and a smattering of crushed pecans, and the pumpkin filling. There's a bit of crunch from the occasional pecan piece but, for the most part, It got soft streusel crumbs (some of which had absorbed some moisture from the filling beneath) along with a soft pumpkin filling.

There was a lot of streusel for the amount of pumpkin in the dessert. The cobbler wasn't all that deep and, at some parts, there seemed like almost a quarter of it was streusel. Flavor-wise, the streusel was sweet and buttery with just a bit of nuttiness from the pecans.

The pumpkin layer was even sweeter than the streusel. It was fairly smooth and moderately spiced.

Taken altogether, Trader Joe's Pumpkin Cobbler didn't seem worth the effort that it took for me to find one. That's not to say it was bad but the streusel wasn't doing much for me compared to a more traditional pie beyond the extra buttery quality. I would have preferred just more pumpkin instead of the streusel or replacing it with pie crust top for more of a texture contrast and buffer against the sweetness of the filling.
