Review: Wendy's - Italian Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich

Wendy's Italian Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich features a crispy-fried chicken breast filet (you can also choose to go with a grilled or spicy filet), a deep-fried mozzarella cheese patty, marinara sauce, and a slice of aged Asiago cheese on a toasted garlic knot bun.

I went and bought one for $7.99.

The crispy, deep-fried mozzarella cheese patty was the star of the show. It offered a light and crisp breading with a satisfying, gooey, stretchy pull to go with a solid dose of creaminess. I would not mind just buying the patty by itself.

The garlic knot bun, on the other hand, was a tad disappointing. It was nice enough to look at but had a plain flavor to go with a thick but fairly normal soft and dense texture. I was expecting to taste some garlic knots but, if it was there, the density of the bun covered it up.  When I think of garlic knots, I think of bread with olive oil and/or butter and garlic. I didn't get any of that here and wondered if a spread of the garlic sauce they use for their new garlic fries might have added some necessary flavor.

Marinara sauce offered tangy tomato notes and vague touches of herb. It was relatively thick but mild otherwise. I think a more robust flavor (or just more sauce) might have been a better play here as it had a lot to stand against between the bun, cheese patty, and chicken patty.

The chicken breast was moist enough and relatively thick with a thin, crispy breading to it. It was lightly seasoned.

The aged Asiago got lost in the shuffle for me. It was nicely melted but not very distinctively.

Overall, Wendy's Italian Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich was good for a varied array of pleasing textures but was overall plain in the flavor department. More of a garlicky punch from the bun and maybe just more marinara might have gone a long way.
