Review: Mtn Dew Baja Blast Hot Sauce

Mtn Dew Baja Blast Hot Sauce features the tropical lime flavor of Mtn Dew Baja Blast combined with tomatillos, habanero peppers, green chiles, and jalapeno peppers.

You can't actually buy these but they were giving them away via sweepstakes in February and I received a bottle courtesy of Mountain Dew.

In appearance, the hot sauce sports a bright teal color that's deeper than Baja Blast and is generally a color not seen in food other than drinks, candies, and maybe fanciful cakes.

While foods that taste like other foods don't always actually taste like the foods they're meant to taste like, that's not the case here. Mtn Dew Baja Blast Hot Sauce definitely tastes like Mtn Dew Baja Blast soda (minus the fizziness). In fact, it tastes too much like Baja Blast as it's very sweet with the signature citrus and coconut notes. To go with the Baja Blast flavor, there's a substantial spicy kick and notes of tangy tomatillos as well as jalapenos.

While it's not unheard of to have a sweet hot sauce (various barbecue sauces and Thai sweet chili sauce come to mind), a sweet hot sauce with a notable coconut flavor makes for an interesting proposition in terms of what you eat it with. The best I could think of was maybe something like shrimp. I tried it with tortilla chips and it wasn't so great.

When it comes down to it, I don't see Mtn Dew Baja Blast Hot Sauce ever hitting store shelves in a wide release. It's basically a love letter to Baja Blast fans who really want a hot sauce that tastes exactly like Baja Blast. It's not bad, I just can't think of anything I'd want to eat with it. I guess you could use it to make a spicy cocktail.
